MCC board deadlocked in vote on president; interim chief likely
The Monroe Community College board of trustees were deadlocked in a vote Saturday that appeared to trigger a new search for a president. The MCC board split, 5-5, between Rochester entrepreneur Dennis Kessler (above right) and former county
legislator William Smith in a search that has been subject to allegations of political patronage. County Democrats issued a statement after the meeting saying the votes for Smith, a Republican lawyer from Pittsford, indicated improper political influence.

Budget includes layoffs, tax hike
Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy’s proposed $478 million budget for 2008-09 would result in cuts to 70 full-time and 33 part-time jobs—including the layoff off 40 full-time and seven part-time workers—an average property tax increase of 4.2 percent, and the consolidation of economic development, community development and neighborhood service centers into one department.
